There is nothing better than a night full of self-care, yummy food, and a great conversation amongst old and new friends. This was exactly the night that Hero Cosmetics (@herocosmetics) organized for NYC on a cool summer night for Acne Awareness Month. This is right about the time of year when everyone wants their skin looking flawless for those summer vibes. Well, I just might have found your Hero!
For those of you who haven’t heard about Hero Cosmetics yet, I will give you a quick debriefing. Hero Cosmetics is a new startup company that has taken on the challenge of battling acne through their first product called the Mighty Patch. They focus greatly on creating a space where people can talk about their skin struggles without any stigma or negativity attached.

I recently got a chance to use the Mighty Patch and boy, were they mighty. They actually work better on the meaner and bigger pimples. These patches use hydrocolloid to help absorb all the pus from whiteheads and decrease inflammation and redness! They must be worn for at least 6 hours but do not fear, they are not that noticeable so you can wear them during the day and you can put makeup over it as well!
Okay now that you’re caught up to speed, we can go back to the event. Three empowering panelists [Jess Young (@jessyoungfood), Jera Foster-Fell (@jera.bean), Lisa Hayim (@thewellnecessities)] opened up the floor and discussed their own skin struggles, victories, and experiences. Hero Cosmetics is shifting the conversation to acknowledge, educate, and become proactive about skin care.

My main takeaways from the panel:
- Every body is different and a diet (i.e Keto) that may work for someone won’t work for another (i.e. a diabetic person who will actually be in danger if they tried the Keto diet).
- Sometimes the things we do to try to eat less (i.e. getting dressing not the side) may actually be making us eat more because the meal is not satisfying or not well-balanced.
- Anything you put into your body, reflects externally as well.
- Focusing less on restrictions and limits we’ve set for ourselves may create more space for joy. Everything in moderation is key.
- Lastly, butt pimples are a thing and you are not alone!
After “school was out of session”, there were 6 extracurriculars that you could explore.

- Intro to Medication by MNDFL
Before the panel, my friend Katie and I jumped into a quick 5-minute mindful meditation session. It was extremely grounding. This is a new way of looking at meditation that can be done anywhere at anytime. I highly recommend looking into this if you are looking for a little of peace in all the hustle and bustle that is life. I know I’ll be using it here and there to recenter myself on a busy day.
- CBD Dosing Station with Rosebud
- CBD Hand Massages by Sundays Nail Studio
Self-care has become such an vital part of my life that I often get massages and drink herbal teas for their medicinal benefits. I’ve also become a huge fan of CBD products after I started using them to aide my sleep and back pain. I was really excited to try these products out and I was not disappointed. The tea actually tasted really good and it didn’t have that CBD oil aftertaste so that’s a win! The hand massage was relaxing and the lotion’s aroma enhanced the experience.
- Jade Rolling 101 by Stephanie Zheng of Mount Lai
Jade rolling has become very popular amongst the beauty scene and I’ve seen it all over my feed but I never actually tried it until Hero Skin School 2019. Surprisingly, the cool jade rolling on my tension spots on my face felt like it released a lot of stress that had accumulated. The sensation is very soothing and feels like a light face massage. I was super excited to find out we got one in our goodie bags when I got home.
- Probiotic Elixir Lab with Nutritionist Mia Rigden
For anyone who knows me, they know I’ve always had stomach issues. I’ve been in a love-hate relationship with my stomach since very young. Lisa had said during the panel that acne is a way your body is alarming you that something is wrong. Whatever good or bad you put into your body is reflected externally so gut health is something I am always working on. This station was informative and the elixir tasted better than other elixirs I’ve had in the past.
- Healthy Snack Bar by BUBBLE
As someone who recently transitioned to a vegan diet, I understand the frustration of having to check every single label and packaging to make sure you’re in the clear before you can eat something. BUBBLE is a website that basically filters it out for you and gives you access to so many more options than what I can find in my local supermarkets. If you’re a snacker, check it out! I actually ate the snacks before I took a picture of them because I was too excited to try them. They did not disappoint!
Last but not least, dinner and rosé was served by Bluestone Lane and Usual Wines. All in all, it was a pretty amazing night, and I would love to thank Hero Cosmetics for extending the invitation to me!
I’d love to hear about your skin care experience as well. Are you having a difficult time taking control of your skin? What other products have you used? What worked and what hasn’t? Do you care about the ingredients in your skin care products? That’s a big one for me.
